BUFFALO TECHNOLOGY SUSPENDS MEMORY BUSINESS IN THE NORTH AMERICAN MARKET
2009-07-31
AUSTIN, TX – July 31, 2009 – Buffalo Technology (USA), Inc., a global leader in the design, development and manufacturing of wired and wireless networking, storage and memory solutions today announced that in order to focus on its storage and networking businesses, it intends to close its US memory division.
In 1997, MELCO, Inc., Buffalo Technology’s holding company, acquired a significant stake in TechWorks, an Austin, Texas-based company best known for its synchronous memory product line. Later in 1998, TechWorks became a subsidiary of Melco, Inc. More recently, TechWorks memory products were sold under the Buffalo Technology brand name.
During the past years, Buffalo has continued its investments in the memory division and substantial efforts were made to sustain the business. In the current economic climate, memory sales have not shown the expected increase, independent of the high quality of Buffalo memory products. Therefore, today, Buffalo Technology decided to no longer continue with its memory business in the United States. Memory divisions in other regions, namely Japan, EMEA and Asia Pacific remain unaffected by this decision.
In line with this strategic decision, Buffalo will focus its available resources on its storage and networking business. “Our storage and networking businesses have significant synergies, are close to market, offer sustainable revenue growth and the best opportunities for future growth and development”, explains Takayuki Nishioka, CEO of Buffalo Technology, USA. “This difficult, but sadly unavoidable step was taken after a comprehensive review of the long term viability of the business. We considered all possible alternatives and took into account the interests of all stakeholders. In the current market Buffalo cannot valorize the memory business in the US without further, major investments of the company." explains Nishioka. He further notes that "Buffalo will focus its resources and will step-up development in the storage and networking sectors, where the company has the strongest technology and business opportunities. In these segments, Buffalo is well positioned to develop its technologies and business faster than the market and to increase its leadership position”.
